What is your name and what do you do?

I'm Yana (pronounced "Jana") a music artist from Argentina and Germany although I was born in Mexico. Yup, it gets confusing sometimes.

I'm a singer songwriter and play guitar. When I'm not performing music I work as an actress in New York.

How long have you been creating music?

I started creating music when I was 13 years old. It was the first time I had picked up a guitar and started to learn the basic chords. I haven't stopped since.

Do you have a favorite song?

That's a tricky question. I'm currently obsessed with the Hamilton soundtrack (who isn't?) so my go to song for now is 'Say No To This'. However now that Ed Sheeran has released his new album it might change to 'What Do I Know?'. I think it's a song that really represents my views at this point.

Who are your musical influences?

I'm really open to any music style. I love everything from musicals to hard rock. My first influences were Guns 'n' Roses, Aerosmith and Queen and later I got really into John Mayer. I also love the Argentinian band Soda Stereo. They were one of the biggest bands in Argentina especially back in the 80s and my Dad would always play me their songs. I think for a musician it's always really important to be open to anything. It's what opens your mind and gives you ideas that later might result in something really original.

Any fun performing stories?

I used to be in a band when I was 16. We would play original songs but also covers of A Day To Remember and other alternative bands. We were really lucky to be the opening act for The Pretty Reckless in Argentina. It was the first time for any of us performing in front of a huge crowd. During the performance, my bassist got a bit too excited and while he was jumping around behind me he almost knocked me off the stage. Luckily nothing major happened, I just knocked my lip against the mic. But what's rock music without a little bit of blood, right?

What's next for you?

I'm currently working on my next EP. It's going to be more personal than anything I've ever written and I'm trying out some new music styles. I also have a tour planned through Argentina in the next few months and I'm currently acting in a bilingual children's show here in New York.

 Fun Questions

If you were stranded on an island what five items would you want with you?

Always a good book! I'd probably take any Harry Potter book because I can reread them over and over again. Then my guitar obviously, a notebook, a guide to how to build a Wooden Raft (just in case I want to attempt an escape) and an unlimited stack of Yerba Mate.

If you could travel back in time where would you go?

I love history so if I could jump around to any era I'd definitely do that. But if I had to choose one I think I'd go back to the Titanic. I've always been so fascinated by the story. And who knows, maybe I could save a few lives, knowing what was going to happen.

If you could meet any musician who would it be?

Freddie Mercury for sure! He was just such a genius and so passionate. I think his performances were so theatrical and inspiring too.

If you had a super power what would it be?

If I could become Spiderwoman that would be really awesome. If not I'd totally be okay with flying. It would save so much transportation and gas money.
