Who are you and what do you do?

I'm Lilli Passero and I create.  Whether I'm lending my voice to a song, or my emotions to a lyric, or my experiences to a character, or my body to a photograph, I always want to be creating something.

What are your musical influences?

My musical influences are frankly always changing.  Right now I'm very inspired by Beachhouse, Rihanna's latest album "Anti," The Righteous Brothers, Haim, Banks, Bruno Mars, Alicia Keys... and then of course there's the artists that never leave me like Lauryn Hill, Marvin Gaye, Aretha Franklin, Etta James, Ella Fitzgerald, Stevie Nicks.  There's a lot going on there, I know :)

Best show experience?

Ahhhh thats so hard.  Seeing Kendrick Lamar at Outside Lands in 2015 was pretty epic.  I've never seen someone work a crowd that way.  Before that actually was also at Outside Lands 2013 I think... and that was Sir Paul McCartney.  Wow is he a showman.  I was deeply inspired by what he did.  He had us all in the palm of his hand.  Seeing Father John Misty at The Wiltern was also wonderful.  He was so charming and silly the whole time and after the show he brought the lights up and started having conversations with people in the audience.  Totally broke the 4th wall in a wonderful friendly casual way.  It didn't feel awkward... he created a feeling of comfortability and normalcy.  Why not stay for a minute and chat with the audience?

Any songs you've written that have a special meaning?

All my songs have special meanings! haha.  Whats special to me about the song my music video is to, "I Keep Seeing" is that it's about someone I was close with who always seemed to make the wrong impression on people.  I would hear stories about them from other people that were completely out of character for the person I knew.  So thats where that hook line comes from "I keep seeing the person no one else sees."  That feeling has been a constant in my life of seeing the good in someone that sometimes other people have trouble seeing.  I know its important to see all aspects of a person, but its just as important to see the good in someone and believe in them and nurture that goodness.  A lot of times people will think an orchid is dead if its not blossomed, but if the leaves are green, its still there.  It will bloom again.  It just needs to be taken care of.

Why do you love performing?

I love performing because I get to share myself in the most pronounced vulnerable and pure way.  Those are the exact reasons I used to really dislike it actually too.  Because I thought it was too indulgent and I was far too insecure to be that vulnerable anyway.  But then I realized how much it meant to me when I saw a great performance and I understood then, thats why its important for me to give other people that enjoyment... or at least try to.

What kind of genre would you place yourself into?

I'm still figuring out my genre.  Especially since so many new artists are creating more and more hybrid genres.  I think maybe I could fall into one of those... or create a new one.  I think my sound speaks for itself and my expressions will land where they belong genre wise.

If you use an instrument what do you use?

I would love to go back in time and practice the piano more during all those years of lessons as a child.  I had poor discipline and was very uninspired by those silly songs you learn from those lesson books.  But anyway, the piano.

What was it like auditioning for The Voice?

Auditioning for The Voice was surreal.  Before I sang I was bursting at the seams with excitement.  I couldn't have prepared anymore and I realized that that was "it."  That was my opportunity to share myself in the biggest way I ever had.  To truly put myself to the test.  Could I inspire an audience enough to move them?  Because if I could do that, surely the rest would fall into place.  I was focusing all my energy into giving a great performance.  If I did that, I could sleep soundly.

What's next for you?

Whats next?! Keep watching and see... :)

Fun Questions

If you were stranded on an island what five items would you want with you?

Oh lord, not this question!  I would probably want something terribly cozy to keep me warm at night since I absolutely hate being cold.  I would definitely want some kind of journal to draw and write in.  A camera would be great fun... but then I'd need batteries and other modern toys, so forget that.  I think I would want my copies of "The Dude and The Zen Master" and "Illusions."  They're kind of my bibles.  I know it sounds weird and terribly vain, but I think I'd want a mirror.  Something to remind me I'm still there, ya know?  Being stranded alone on a desert island would be pretty lonely.

If you could sing on any stage where would it be?

I don't dream about any special stages.  They all look good to me :)

If you could meet any musical legend who would it be? (Although this question might have already been answered now that you are working with a legend)

Ha! Truly I am.  Alicia is a force.  Hmm... it would be crazy cool to work with Rick Hall of FAME studios in Muscle Shoals, Alabama.  He touched so many magical records and has had such an interesting life.  I would love to spend some time with that mind and hear all those stories and get a bit of that magic.

If you could have a super power what would it be?

I would want to move objects with my mind... because then I could also move myself and fly.

If you could go back in time where would you travel?

Thats another answer that is always changing.  In this moment I think I would either like to visit my parents during their childhoods, or go back and visit myself in mine.
